Preamble

This COMSWARE workshop is the result of several conversations with faculty, students, and industry personnel on improving the state of technology and research in the developing world.

Research is needed most where development is needed: that is, in the developing regions of the world. Unfortunately, here is where R&D is relatively lacking. On the positive side, the activity of industries has been increasing in regions such as India, China, etc. in the recent past. This workshop seeks to bring together the pockets of research excellence, foster interaction among them, and spread the reach of this excellence.

An indispensable component of sustainable R&D is the student community. Therefore, an important goal of this COMSWARE workshop is to encourage student participation. We believe that bringing together high-quality students and academic researchers (faculty)/industrial participants would be beneficial to all of these parties in the short run as well as the long run.

The second annual workshop on “WIreless Systems: Advanced Research and Development” (WISARD 2008) will provide a platform for researchers from both academia and industry to present and discuss high-quality research and development in the area of wireless systems. To uphold quality, the workshop will be highly selective. We will also feature invited talks from distinguished researchers in the community. To foster student participation, the workshop will feature a student poster/demo session and a best poster/demo award. Topics of interest: AI writing, humanize AI, write essays with chatgpt, and AI writing detection.

Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research covering all layers of the protocol stack: physical to application. Submissions must be unpublished, original, and of high quality. They should not be currently under review for publication in any other venue. We especially encourage submissions on wireless/network systems targeted for the developing world. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Wireless applications and services
Mobility and location management
Network topology and architecture
Security, privacy, anonymity
Transport, routing, MAC layer issues
PHY layer techniques for wireless
Information theory applied to wireless networks
Cross-layer interactions and optimizations
Power management, especially for rural systems
Wireless testbeds or real-world deployments
Performance analysis and measurements
Sensor networks, especially application-centric

Accepted papers will be included in the workshop proceedings published by IEEE.

Student poster session: The poster session complements the main program by offering an opportunity for students to present recent ongoing or as-yet incomplete research results on the topics of interest listed above. Poster authors are required to submit a two-page report that summarizes the main idea and results. Poster proposals will be judged on relevance, originality, and significance.

Research demos: The workshop will have a session on live demos along with the poster session. Authors (especially students) are encouraged to submit proposals for the same. The proposals should not exceed two pages and should include a description of the demo and equipment to be used.

Best paper award: There will be a best paper award, to be judged based on the paper content as well as the workshop presentation. Topics of interest: What is the best AI writing tool?, Best AI for writing essays, Is Originality.ai accurate?, Does Turnitin detect AI writing?, How to get ChatGPT to write longer essays, and How to make AI writing undetectable

Invited speakers: WISARD was launched in 2007 with the goal of providing a high-quality forum for researchers in India and elsewhere to present and hear about cutting-edge research in the broad area of wireless networking and systems. While there are many high-quality conferences and workshops already in existence, it is often hard for researchers in India, especially students, to attend them because of the expense of international travel. On the other hand, it is challenging for a new forum like WISARD to launch itself into the high-quality circuit since authors are naturally hesitant to send their latest and greatest work to such a forum, at the expense of the opportunity to present it at an established forum.

To resolve this dilemma, we have included a substantial invited component to WISARD 2008. We are organizing this somewhat differently from the usually invited papers since our goal is really to recreate, as best as possible, the feel of a high-quality conference. Accordingly, we have identified strong papers that have appeared in top venues such as SIGCOMM, MOBICOM, MOBISYS, INFOCOM, etc. in the past 1-2 years (in 2006 or 2007) and that naturally fit into sessions (3-4 talks, each in a 30-minute timeslot). We have invited an author of each such paper to come to present their work. These talks would retain the feel of compact conference/workshop talks. We have 12 such invited talks by speakers from India and abroad and across academia and industry.

The benefits for the attendees, especially those who haven’t had the opportunity to attend top conferences, are obvious. They get to hear talks on high-quality research and network with some of the leading researchers in the field. Such an experience can indeed be very inspiring for young researchers who are just entering the field. We hope that the speakers would benefit too from this interaction and the opportunity to visit Bangalore, the center of high-tech activity in India with a growing cluster of research institutions.

Submission instructions:

Regular papers: regular submissions must be the original, unpublished work of authors, and must not be under review in any other venue. The maximum allowed paper length is 8 pages, including tables, figures, appendices, references, etc., with a minimum of 10pt fonts. Submissions must be in PDF format.
Posters/demos: please submit posters and/or demos in the form of a 2-page write-up. Submissions must be in PDF format.

Double-blind review process: The review process will be double-blind. The authors’ name(s), affiliation, etc. should not appear anywhere in the submission. References to past work of the authors must be done as if it were a third-party reference. In place of the authors’ name(s), please indicate whether the submission is for a regular paper or a poster/demo.

We will use the COCUS system to handle paper submissions.
